A piece of chocolate can give you a joy but if you are suffering from acid reflux, you may need to avoid chocolate because chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which cause reflux. After long research, the researcher found that chocolate significantly increased the number of reflux events. According to Chung Owyang, chief of the University of Michigan Division of Gastroenterology and professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, “We demonstrated that chocolate induces GERD symptoms by compromising the ability of the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent the stomach acids from creeping back up the esophagus,”
If you are suffering from acid reflux or GERD, you may consider limiting your coffee consumption. Coffee contains caffeine that relaxes the LES (lower esophageal sphincter). However, recent researchers showed that coffee doesn’t make any hard impact on GERD.
3. Carbonated Beverage

8. Spicy Foods
Spicy foods can worsen reflux symptoms. Now NIH (National Institute of Health) also includes spicy foods on its list. If you are using spicy items like chili daily, It can cause burning sensation in abdomen.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) makes acid reflux worse. If you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), do not take peppermint. Peppermint relaxes the esophagus between the stomach and sphincter. This way it allows stomach acid to flow back to the esophagus.

Citrus foods like lemon, grapefruit, and pineapple relax the lower esophageal sphincter and increase the chances of reflux.
Most of the people start their morning with a cup of tea. Can this beverage cause acid reflux? No. Not all tea cause reflux but only caffeinated tea can do this to you if you consume a lot. Because tea contains caffeine and caffeine relax the LES.
